About Brainy Day

Brainy Day Chronicles - Episode 1

by Timothy Gadanidis

Brainy Day had its beginnings in 1988, when founder George Gadanidis wrote a book called Understanding Integers. It was rejected by a publisher after months of waiting, along with the note "Next time include postage, so we can send it back." Unimpressed, George talked to his friend Gary Lessard with a proposition - create a magazine.

In the first quarter of 1989, they released the first issue of Math Mania. It contained all sorts of math activities, including concepts, history, and puzzles. They paid for the printing of 5000 copies and sent them to schools across Canada, looking for subscribers. About 1500 subscriptions were bought.

After 3 years, the magazine ended circulation, with George pursuing his Ph.D. and Gary involved in other projects. Eventually, George resumed the magazine's publication for another 3 years, also creating an electronic version, which was licensed by NCS Pearson for schools across the United States.

George liked the idea of being his own publisher. He didn't have to wait months for feedback and enjoyed the freedom of being his own editor. He began publishing books and stories, along with interactive content, that focused on math but eventually expanded into science and literature, causing him to change the name to be more inclusive (Brainy Day).
